The building that houses Bill’s Bottle Shop was a filling station years ago, but the filling part didn’t stop when the gasoline went away. The building has been converted to a liquor store that sells spirits, beer, wines and festive non-alcoholic beverages, many of them made in Texas. Also on the shelves is a selection of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and drink serving accessories.
Jo Rich manages the business owned by William Sanders. Bill’s Bottle Shop in Midland, TX is more than two decades old.
“We try to keep our prices comparable to other prices, and we will match prices when we can,” Jo said.
Many customers are familiar to her. They call Jo by name and she knows the product and size they prefer. However, she is clear that the legal age to enter the bottle shop is 21 unless accompanied by an adult guardian, and emphasized that alcohol and cigarette customers, who must be 21, are asked for age identification at both the drive-up window and in the shop.
“I card anyone who looks under age,” Jo said.
The store is packed with liquor options such as Bacardi Rum & Jack Daniels, fine wine and beer that span the price, taste and size range.
“We have a good selection of miniature bottles of liquor,” she said. “The 50-milliliter size makes a good shot.”
However, what makes a trip inside fun is the selection of Lone Star products reminding shoppers good drinks are bottled in their own state.
“We are trying to carry all the Texas products that we know of,” Jo said.
