What's for dinner? Dos Compadres

Along the south bank of Scharbauer Draw on Garfield Street, you will find a restaurant that has been serving all types of Mexican dishes for more than 17 years. The Mexican food restaurants, owned by Robert and Zoila Granado, has locations in Midland and Odessa.

As soon as you enter the doors, the hostess is ready to seat you in one of their many areas for seating. I went to the location in Midland. There is a section by the bar, one that is a little elevated and more private, and then another open area on your right when you enter. They also offer a separate dining room for parties or meetings. The walls have traditional Mexican decor of scenes, including a painting of the owners outside their restaurant.

As we were seated, drink orders were quickly taken and served. Chips and their delicious salsa were placed on the table for us to enjoy while we decided what to order. The menu is quite extensive, offering items ranging from appetizers, seafood, steaks, combination plates and specials. Appetizers include a wide variety of nachos from fajita to cheese, Chile con queso and several types of quesadillas.

I ordered one of the house specials, which consisted of one beef taco, one cheese enchilada, one Guadalajara, and one beef chile relleno. My husband ordered bean and cheese nachos. Everything was delivered back to our table hot, steaming and delicious and just as we ordered.

There are 15 house specials from which to choose. Granados includes two roast beef flautas topped with roast beef sauce, rice, beans and guacamole. The El Compadre has one taco, cheese enchilada, tamale, guacamole salad, quesadillas and rice and beans. Of course, there are a la carte items as well as combination plates.

If you are in the mood for seafood, Dos Compadres offers breaded catfish fillets or whole catfish, oysters on a shell, and shrimp cocktail. You can also order a seafood combination plate, which includes breaded catfish, shrimp, fries and salad.

Beefeaters will be more than satisfied with all of their choices on the menu. The rib-eye has a Mexican food spin on it, topped with grilled onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños, and is served with rice and beans and two tortillas. The T-bone is dished up with a baked potato or fries, and the chicken fried streak with country gravy and fries. Chopped steak and hamburgers also are among a diners' many options. Fajitas (beef, chicken or shrimp ) are served with rice, beans, guacamole and two flour tortillas.

Dos Compadres has a unique version of fajitas I have not seen before. These are portabella fajitas (mushrooms with bell peppers and onions served with rice and beans, guacamole and two tortillas.)

Children have their own section of the menu with items such as tacos, burritos, cheese enchiladas, (each served with rice and beans) a grilled cheese sandwich or chicken fingers (served with fries). Drinks are included with the kid's meals.

Dos Compadres also features daily specials. The day I was there, a Chile Verde plate was offered for $7.50. If you visit on Wednesday, you can order the fajita special for the same price. The menu also lists daily lunch specials, which are available Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The full service bar has drink specials: Monday and Wednesday, tap beer for $1.25; Tuesday and Thursday, margaritas for $2.50; and Friday, Tecate is sold for $1.50.
